The Challenge
The client required a brand-new digital platform to serve as a directory for dog rescue centres across the United Kingdom. The primary goal was to simplify the process for users to find rehoming information, volunteer opportunities, and external donation links through one central database. With no existing website in place, the project needed a clear structure to manage data for approximately 150 initial rescue centres while allowing for future growth. The site had to feature complex filtering systems for location and breed, alongside an events calendar and a submission portal for individual rescues to manage their own listings. Ensuring a user-friendly experience for dog lovers while maintaining a professional and illustrative aesthetic was essential for the project's success. The Solution
We developed a bespoke WordPress website that prioritises functionality and engagement through a custom-built directory and an illustrative design style. The solution includes a map view using Leaflet.js, allowing users to filter rescue centres by region, distance, and volunteer availability. We implemented custom submission forms with approval workflows for both directory listings and fundraising events, ensuring the client maintains full editorial control. To support the project's mission, we integrated a donation area for one-off and recurring payments and a WooCommerce shop for branded merchandise. Slow-animated cloud elements and a suite of dog breed illustrations were incorporated to create a welcoming, "feel-good" atmosphere that aligns perfectly with the brand’s passionate rehoming focus. The Outcome
Samstail now possesses a interactive directory that bridges the gap between UK rescue centres and potential adopters or volunteers. The platform provides a seamless user journey, from searching local listings via an integrated map to discovering upcoming adoption events through a toggleable calendar view. By providing a central resource exchange and a blog for "feel-good" stories, the website has established itself as a vital community hub for the rehoming sector. The inclusion of a capped merchandise store and donation calls to action provides the business with sustainable ways to support their ongoing mission. With a mobile-responsive design and an easy-to-manage backend, the site is fully equipped to grow as more rescues join the national database.Samstail
Samstail is a dedicated UK-based directory designed to support dog rescue centres and promote the passionate rehoming of dogs across the country. Founded by a rescue dog owner, the organisation required a central digital database to help people find rehoming information, volunteer roles, and fundraising events quickly and easily. With an ambitious goal to feature hundreds of centres, they needed a professional partner to build a custom platform that could handle complex data filtering while remaining accessible and visually engaging for a community of dog lovers.
When the Samstail team approached us, their priority was to create a functional "Find a Rescue" tool with regional filters and map integration. They wanted a site that encouraged community involvement through event submissions, volunteer sign-ups, and a library of educational resources for rescue operations. A key requirement was an illustrative aesthetic featuring specific dog breeds to create a friendly atmosphere, alongside practical features like a WooCommerce store and a donation portal. The site also needed a landing page with a subscription form to build an audience prior to the full directory launch.
We designed a custom WordPress site that combines advanced technical functionality with a playful, illustrative brand identity across every page. The development focused on a directory system where rescue centres can submit details for approval, plotted on a map for user convenience. We integrated a Facebook social feed and a newsletter service to keep the community updated on "feel-good" stories and upcoming adoption events. The final result is a scalable, mobile-friendly platform that allows Samstail to manage their directory efficiently while providing a high-quality experience for users looking to make a difference.
