Twitter expands its character count to 280 and Echo looks at the benefit for business.

It’s currently out for global testing with selected accounts now able to send tweets that are twice the length of the previous limit. But why is this happening and what does it mean for your business?

You may notice over the coming weeks that tweets are taking a second longer to read as more and more users gain access to the 280-character tweet limit slowly rolling its way out across the globe.

In a recent address to the world (via Twitter of course) co-founder Biz Stone explained:

“Originally, our constraint was 160 (limit of a text) minus username. But we noticed @biz got 1 more than @jack. For fairness, we chose 140. Now texts are unlimited. Also, we realize that 140 isn’t fair-there are differences between languages. We’re testing the limits. Hello 280!”

You guessed it. Exactly 280 characters and he managed to explain the origin of tweet lengths in that! Adjusting tweets to meet the 140 character limit is a widely reported frustration and stops users from producing content for the platform organically. Instead, they edit thoughts to meet the character criteria, but no more!

So what does this mean for your business? Well, in 280 characters…

You can now put more thought into the content you tweet. Promoting your product or service becomes more natural and tweeting becomes a pleasant experience because you can type away passionately about how your business solves a problem for your customers without 140 taunting you!

Ok, we might have been 1 character short but you get our point. Writing tweets for your business accounts is much easier now. You can tap away at speed and with purpose. There is less pressure to count characters. The 140 character limit you hit almost instantly is gone.

Don’t forget to use this space for business benefit. Include more keywords and hashtags. They help potential customers find you!

We’ll keep you updated when the change is rolled out fully or follow @_EchoWeb and keep your eyes peeled for our first 280 character tweet. If you need help with your social media marketing then contact us today for a free consultation on how we can help you achieve your social ambitions.
