Windows 10

Microsoft has just announced the newest version of its Windows operating system – Windows 10.  Microsoft is banking that a mobile & cloud-first operating system is to be the biggest milestone in the operating systems history.

So, What’s New on Windows 10?

Windows 10 is being designed to run across all devices, from smart TVs, PCs, laptops, smartphones, tablets, servers and Internet of Things (IoT) devices (everyday objects that have network connectivity and send/receive data).

Terry Myerson (Microsoft):

“Windows 10 will deliver the right experience on the right device at the right time. It will be our most comprehensive platform ever”.

Windows 10 is said to run on all devices, but the user experience will be somewhat different depending what device you are using.

I’m a Developer, What’s Different?

There will now be one application platform, which means only one application will need to be created and it will work on any device.

Coming from the perspective of writing from a web development company, I really hope that the mobile-first Operating system has persuaded Microsoft into creating an internet browser that meets the standard of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox and fully supports HTML5/CSS3, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see if there is a new browser coming with this OS.

Windows 10 Features

Microsoft has taken it back to basics, and promises to bring a more user friendly interface (for mobile and PCs) which utilises the web and allows quick access to programs and features. Touchscreen will be supported and so will the traditional mouse and keyboard.

Return of an Old Friend

You guessed it, Microsoft have listened to everyone’s feedback and the Start Menu has returned. In Windows 10 the Start Menu has had a facelift and now includes a new space for adding most used applications and/or websites.

Start Menu Search

Accessible via the familiar Start Menu and Task Bar there will be a search option that will display results from your device and the web – hopefully we will be able to default the search provider to Google.

Improved Multitasking

There is a new Task View button which helps a user to view all of the open applications or files simultaneously and quickly navigate and switch between them.

Tiled Windows (Snap) Improvements

In Windows 10, it is now possible to snap four Windows to a page. It will also make suggestions on the best way to utilise the available screen space.

Multiple Desktops

A useful feature Windows 10 will have is that you will now be able to create multiple desktops; this means you can create and swap between your Work and Home desktop to make sure you can keep the different parts of your life separate and organised.

Why is it called Windows 10, what happened to Windows 9?

Microsoft went straight from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 missing out Windows 9, this was unexpected and this is because the company believes that this OS is incredibly significant and is too much of a leap to represent the system at Windows 9.

In the future Microsoft has said they will aim to release regular updates and patches to Windows 10 adding new features and the inevitable Windows bug fixes.

Microsoft is trying to bring back elements of Windows 7 to Windows 10, following the feedback of the unpopularity of Windows 8.

“This new Windows must help our customers be productive in both their digital work and their digital life. This new Windows must empower people and organisations to do great things.”

When is the release of Windows 10?

Microsoft has not yet announced a launch date for the public version although it is expected sometime “later in the year” of 2015. There is also a great deal of speculation of how much Windows 10 will cost, it was rumoured it would be free to consumers but that was denied by Microsoft.

I want to try Windows 10 now!

You’re in luck, a technical preview will be available to download later this week via the Windows Insider Program. Microsoft says that the technical preview it is aimed at “PC experts and IT pros comfortable using pre-release software with variable quality” and advises users to install it on a second machine due to possible bugs/errors.
