It may be the case that you complete all or some of your social media management. Maybe you post regularly on personal profiles but neglect your own business page or maybe you outsource the whole thing? But whatever you do, don’t let your business’ social media presence go up in smoke.

Okay, worst case you totally ignore social media, considering it a waste of time. But know this: this is a fatal mistake. It is through these very channels people from all audiences look to now for information, recommendations and validation on brands.

That’s why we’ve put together a quick list of 10 ways you can win at social media and see your business boom.

1. Every network is different

Do not post the same content on all of your platforms. Consider what type of post works best, what you want to achieve by using the channel and what will provoke engagement. Check to see that (when tagging a person or company) you are using the right @ handle and the platform has picked up the link. It doesn’t look too professional to see ‘Thanks for the care package @superdupercoffeeco!’ on a Facebook post that was clearly copied over from Instagram.

2. Leaders lead, followers follow

Don’t try to be that cool account that doesn’t follow anyone else. It’ll leave you lonely and your reach low. Use your competitor’s followers list as a starting point and guide. Users following them are likely to also want to see your content and follow you back. Similarly, however, it also doesn’t look great to stumble across a company that follows 28,919 accounts. So follow wisely.

3. Business and personal accounts should be kept separate

Don’t stark heckling your rival football team’s latest tweet with your company’s Twitter account – no matter how obvious that last-minute dive was. It’s unprofessional and can interrupt your personal brand and identity. Separating accounts out is easy, free and keeps the family holiday snaps personal away from your summer sale offerings.

4. Answer! Reply! Engage!

It’s what social media is all about – and it’s how many people prefer to communicate with brands and businesses. Too many people fail to pick up social enquiries like they would an email or the phone, when these are real people and real leads! We think this one really speaks for itself but people fail to respond to messages and lose business on social accordingly.

5. Know your channels

Find being on social too much? You don’t need to be on every social media channel; just the ones appropriate for your business. If you’re not sure what that means, we’d be happy to explain more based on a free social media audit of your business.

6. Control volume and avoid over-saturation

Find the balance of how much you need to post per channel. Don’t waste time posting too much but don’t neglect your audience. If you’re not seeing results, maybe you need to consider how often you’re actually posting – and the content itself.

7. Show gratitude towards your followers

Your audience has chosen to follow you online, so reward them once in a while. Run a giveaway, or offer them a voucher code (this’ll also tell you how engaged your social media audience is). Online exclusives will bring advocacy and, in time, more followers.

8. Be patient

Much like SEO, results will take time but the investment will prove fruitful for your business. Trust us, we’ve seen it many times and are happy to put you in contact with some of our clients who will tell you about the boost social media has given their business.

9. Have fun!

It’s not just about selling. If you educate your audience enough, they will see the value your service/product holds and take action accordingly. Show you have more than one layer.
