Having recently rivalled Snapchat with its Stories feature, Instagram has now has tackled the issue with user bios. Whilst this update doesn’t mean much for individual users sharing photos to their friends, it does open the doors to many possibilities for business and influencers.
Instagram announced in a recent press update:
“Now when you include a # or @ in your bio, they become live links that lead to a hashtag page or another profile.”
What this means is for those who follow a specific hashtag or want to engage with a certain topic, you will now be linked not only to photos and videos, but also Instagram account that have included the relevant hashtag within their bio. Prior to this change, even if #DigitalMarketing was displayed, it would be plain text with no link attribute.
Now displaying live, interactive links, businesses can target their market audience quicker than before. This also spells good news for business who work closely with Instagram influencers – their accounts can now be directly linked from the influencer’s bio; in the same way you would see “@NikeUK Athlete” in your favourite footballer’s Twitter bio.
However, if you mention someone else’s account inside your bio, the recipient will have to accept whether or not to remove this link from your bio. If denied, the profile name will remain inside your bio, but without any link.
