Echo Blog - Core Update May 2020
04/12/2020 Update: Google have announced a December 2020 Core Algorithm Update. Their recommendations haven’t changed – they are still focusing on quality content and trustworthiness, but as with any update, their algorithm is getting smarter! They have reposted their advice and documentation from the May 2020 Core Update, so read on for more information on what to expect for your business and website.

NB: Please note the below blog details the Google May 2020 Core Algorithm Update. Google announced a core update both in May and December 2020, detailing the same advice and guidance for both updates – therefore, this information remains relevant!

Once again Google strikes with a Core Algorithm Update, but what does this mean for you, your rankings and your business? Your search engine rankings may fluctuate temporarily, but will settle over the next few days.

Although previous updates like Penguin and The Page Speed Update saw websites penalised for poor performance, Google has now emphasised that fluctuations don’t directly mean that you did anything wrong or that something needs to be ‘fixed’. Instead, the search results have been reevaluated – some resources that were previously viewed as highly relevant and useful might not be the best fit for a search term anymore.

Google tells us:

“One way to think of how a core update operates is to imagine you made a list of the top 100 movies in 2015. A few years later in 2019, you refresh the list. It’s going to naturally change. Some new and wonderful movies that never existed before will now be candidates for inclusion. You might also reassess some films and realize they deserved a higher place on the list than they had before. The list will change, and films previously higher on the list that move down aren’t bad. There are simply more deserving films that are coming before them.”

What Does This Mean for Your Rankings?

While the update rolls out you may notice that your keywords fluctuate more than usual. As your website finds its feet again in the SERPs so do your competitors, although this will calm down after a while and we can begin to see a more consistent result of where you’re currently placed in search engines.

What Can You Do?

Similarly to the January 2020 Core Update and the November Update, Google is making more changes to its algorithm to provide users with better results for their queries. What does this mean? It means creating quality content that’s unique, valuable and trustworthy.

You’ll want to avoid duplicating content across your site, as well as from other websites across the web and focus on providing the best information possible to your customers – although this has been the standard for a while!

When it comes to businesses regarding finance or health & wellbeing, Google will be extra critical of the information you’re making live, so showing that you’re an expert in the field will be extremely important.

As Google continues to test the waters on this new update, we’ll be closely monitoring our client campaign rankings to ensure high positions and quick recoveries – we’re on it!
