Echo Insights: #Hastag10 today

Today marks the 10th birthday of the Hashtag so we thought we’d take a step back and look at how this symbol became a central element of social media.

What is the Hashtag?

Back in the day the hash key was commonly used as the pound symbol or placed before a number. Today it is used to curate widespread conversations on social media and has become an integral part of these platforms.

The hashtag is made by placing a hash sign (#) in front of keywords, phrases and other text strings on social media as a way to track topics and conversations.

The hashtag widespread began when Twitter developer Chris Messina announced in 2007 that the platform would begin grouping topics together using the # symbol. Since then, the popularity of the hashtag has grown tremendously and other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest have all joined this revolutionary craze. No doubt more will follow!

In the last ten years, this symbol has evolved and now has great power and significance. It has slowly dominated social media, become a wonderfully simple tool and presented an opportunity for business owners to reach their audience. Social media influencers and digital marketers use it to amplify the strength of their social media campaign and many will even use it in their day to day conversations.

Using a hashtag on social media is not only easy, but it can be a great way to attract engagement and become part of a conversation in your industry. Customers will often follow hashtags to find inspiration, new products and check reviews of businesses, making it an exceptional advertising tool.

Be part of the conversation, #Hashtag.
