The hashtag widespread began when Twitter developer Chris Messina announced in 2007 that the platform would begin grouping topics together using the # symbol. Since then, the popularity of the hashtag has grown tremendously and other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest have all joined this revolutionary craze. No doubt more will follow!
